Roland Dyens shares the joy of his musical talent through his performing, composing and teaching across the world. This three-dimensional profile provides the basis for his phenomenal success and his ongoing evolution. Roland Dyens’ concerts unfold as personal experiences of emotional awakening for the audience. Inspired by the musical unity demonstrated in his concerts, audience members will often later use the impact of the artist’s virtuosity and creativity to guide their own perception of music and, more broadly, their lives as well. For those who are unfamiliar with the contours and nuances of classical guitar performance, one often witnesses an inspirational discovery of the instrument and its musical potential, not to mention the pleasure it gives the audience. Roland Dyens has a sensitive and colorful approach to the guitar - an unfailing open-mindedness which brings together all forms of music to each and every one of his programs. His stage presence, his improvised openings and unique relationship with the listeners undeniably position him at the forefront of guitar performance today. For a long time now, his music has been an integral part of the instrument’s repertoire, placing him at the heart of a select group of contemporary guitarist/composers who enjoy such a privileged position. His compositions and arrangements are widely performed and highly acclaimed throughout the world. They provide a new breath of life for the guitar as this player and composer never ceases to challenge the limitations of his instrument. The growing number of participants and auditors in Roland Dyens’ master classes is surely due to the depth of his approach which is rich in innovative themes. With a keen sense of quality and emotional strength, his natural ability to communicate with younger generations of guitarists transforms the formality of a master class into a joyful encounter. Roland Dyens teaches at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Born on October 19, 1955, French interpreter, composer, arranger and improviser Roland Dyens began guitar studies at the age of nine. Four years later he became a student of Spanish Master guitarist Alberto Ponce and, in 1976, was awarded the Licence de Concert de l’ÉcoleNormale de Musique de Paris. While learning his instrument, Roland Dyens also studied composition with the renowned teacher, composer and conductor DésiréDondeyne under whose guidance he was awarded the First Prize in Harmony, Counterpoint and Analysis. Among the most distinguished awards obtained during the early years of his career, Roland Dyens received the Special Prize at the International Competition Città di Alessandria (Italy) and the Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie Charles-Cros, both in honor of the major Brasilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. At the age of 25 he became a laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. Eight years after this, he was recognized as one of the “Best Living Guitarists” in all styles by the French magazine Guitarist. On the 30th of September 2006, he was awarded the “Chitarrad’Oro 2006” for his body of compositions by the Presidency of the Città di Alessandria International Competition. The following year, in 2007, he was honoured by the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA), which chose him to compose the set piece for its prestigious annual competition, held in Los Angeles. More than 50 guitarists presented «Anyway» and its central improvisation. (It’s noteworthy that two students of Roland Dyens, JérémyJouve and Thomas Viloteau, won the highly coveted first prize at the GFA competition in 2003 and 2006 respectively.) In October 2007, during his autumn tour of North America, Roland Dyens’ October 6th recital in Winnipeg earned five stars from the Winnipeg Free Press. It was only the second time that the daily paper, established in 1872, had awarded such high praise. On the 27th of July 2008, his works are again recognized in Italy with the Premio per la Composizione at the 2nd International Festival of Città di Fiuggi, near Rome. A few months later, he was privileged to be asked to compose the music and conduct the ensemble which will be performing in order to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the prestigious Guitar Ensemble Association of Japan. “Soleilslevants” was finally premiered on November 9th 2008 in Nakano Zero Main Hall of Tokyo. On the 21st of January 2010, Roland Dyens is honored with the privilege of being the only classical guitarist invited to participate to an homage to the great Django Reinhardt, in a concert that will be given at the legendary Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In July, 2011, his recital at the International Córdoba Guitar Festival received the highest accolade of the coveted "Five Stars" from the Spanish Press, titling its review "Roland Dyens, El Mago de la guitarra" (the Wizzard of guitar). Roland Dyens is ranked highest in the "Top 100" list of most record. Otto Vowinkel He was born and raised in the old centre of Amsterdam... He was born and raised in the old centre of Amsterdam from a family of tailors. When he was 19 he went to Mallorca, Spain, where he worked in a bar for 2 years. Back in Holland he starded his own bar and restaurant. It was only during that period that he started playing classical guitar. His guitar teacher, Carlo Mell, also did some repair work on guitars. Otto found this very intersting and that triggered him to start making guitars himself. He stoped with his restaurant work, bought the book “Classical guitar construction” by Irving Sloane, a saw and a chissel,a pile of wood and began making his first guitar in the attic of his house on an old pool table. This was in 1984. This first guitar was realy a disaster! But, he made an other one and an other one showing his instruments to all people who could give him some kind of comment. This proved to be a very good method. In 1989 he met guitar player Esther Steenbergen as well as the Dutch, but living in Andalusia, guitarmaker Alex van der Horst, known as “Alejandro” (1959-2009) He married Esther and started working toghether with Alex on a regulary base during the periods Alex is in Holland. They share their ideas about the qualiy of the ideal guitar”: flexibility of tone, a quick respnse and the quality of the sound as carrier of the volume. He develops as a guitar maker with eye for details and a strong preference for traditional buildt instruments. Slow but sure he becomes a houshold name in the classical guitar world with clients all over the world. All his concert instruments are french polished, an old fashion method of polishing with shellac. He made an intense study of this art and gave lectures and workshops about this method and about guitar making in Europe, Japan, Taiwan, China, South America and South Africa. He uses the “normal” materials for his guitars like German spruce and Canadian cedar for the top and different kinds of rosewood for the back and sides. Lately he also uses Coco Bolo for the back and sides as well as maple. In his rosette he procecces the flag of the city of Amsterdam. Besides “normal” concert guitars he also makes flamenco guitars, quart guitars and fift-bass guitars, an instrument tuned a perfect fift lower that a standard guitar. This guitar has a wider body and a scale of 72 cm. This instrument is used in ensembles but is also very suitible to play cello music in the original score. Musicians playing Vowinkel guitars include “The Amsterdam guitar trio”, Sanel Redzic, Denis Azabagic, Tariq Harb Leonardo Amuedo, George Sakkelariou amongst others. Besides his concert models he also designed and developed 3 different “student” models. These instruments are made in Spain in small workshops under his supervision. He is still maried with Esther Steenbergen. Togheter they run the “Masters of the guitar” concert series in the world famous “Concertgebouw” in Amsterdam. JOHANNES MÖLLER(Sweden) The European guitarist and composer Johannes Möller has captivated ... The European guitarist and composer Johannes Möller has captivated audiences throughout the world with charismatic and soulful performances. In 2010 he was awarded first prize in the GFA Concert Artist Competition, considered by many to be the most prestigious guitar competition in the World. As a performer, Johannes’s artistry has reached well beyond the usual guitar circles. This was confirmed in March 2008 when he won the Dutch VriendenkransConcours while competing against performers in all instrumental categories. As a part of this award his name has been engraved on a metal plate that can be seen in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He also became the first guitarist ever to win the Ljunggrenska Competition (Sweden) in 2007, and the conclusion issued by the jury was: “With the help of a breathtaking technique and all the colors of the rainbow he opens a door to a world of subtle expressions which strikes us with great power and intensity.” In 2005, he became the first guitarist to win The Bromsgrove Festival International Young Musicians Platform (England). Critics have also noted his special qualities, writing of his playing “Guitarist Johannes Moller achieved miracles with his lucid, spacious playing.” (Stephen Pettitt, London Evening Standard). At the age of 12 as a self-taught composer Johannes experienced an outburst of creativity that resulted in a large quantity of mainly chamber music works for various instrumentations. A selection of these works was recorded on a CD with some of the top instrumentalists in Sweden when he was 14 years old. A critic from the Swedish newspaper Göteborgsposten wrote about these compositions, ”What is to become of Johannes Möller? A Swedish Mozart – in our time?” In his later teenage years, Johannes continued composing experimenting with various compositional styles and techniques. It was however not until he composed his piece “When the Winds Dissolve” for alto flute and guitar in 2006 that he found his personal voice. The world premiere of this composition took place during the “Iserlohn International Guitar Symposium”. It was received with such enthusiasm from colleges and students alike that he decided to dedicate himself to mainly compose music for the guitar. In 2009, he won a “European Guitar Award” for his guitar solo composition and in October 2010, a CD was released of Johannes performing his own Music. Johannes has earned a Bachelor of Music with Honors from the Royal College of Music in London where he studied guitar with Gary Ryan and Carlos Bonell and composition with William Mival.
